What local SEO is and how it works in Ireland, in plain English

Local SEO is how a business gets found by people nearby. That means on the map, in the results under it, and more and more in Google’s AI answers. Here’s how it works for Irish businesses, what to do first, and where to go deeper.

What is local SEO?

Local SEO is the work of showing up when people near you search for what you do. It covers your Google Business Profile, a website with a page for each service, your reviews, and your details on other sites. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and you can’t pay for a better position on the map.

Where local customers find you

When someone searches for a local service, Google shows them three things. Local SEO is the work of showing up well in each.

1. The map

2. The results below

Above the map you’ll sometimes see listings marked Sponsored. They look like map results, but they’re ads: the business pays Google when someone clicks or calls. Paying for ads doesn’t move you up the map underneath, which is decided by your profile, distance and reviews.

How local SEO differs from general SEO

It’s the same foundations, plus the map. Google weighs distance and local reputation for searches where someone wants a business nearby.

How to do local SEO, in order

For most Irish businesses, this order gets results soonest.

  1. 1

Start with getting on Google Maps, then choosing your category. Working from home? Read Google Business Profile without a shopfront.

  6. 6

Not just rankings. Check your map position from where your customers are, as shown in how to rank higher on Google Maps.

Why reviews matter so much

Reviews do two jobs: they help you rank, and they decide whether people ring you once they’ve found you. BrightLocal’s Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 found:

What customers look for in reviews
97%
read online reviews for local businesses
68%
will only use a business rated four stars or higher
47%
won’t use a business with fewer than 20 reviews
74%
look for reviews from the last three months
80%
are more likely to use a business that replies to all its reviews
45%
have used AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier

The survey asked 1,002 US consumers. There’s no equivalent Irish survey, so treat the numbers as a guide.

What’s different in Ireland

  • Small towns, small competitionOutside the cities, getting the basics right is often enough to reach the map. Search “plumber” on Google Maps from Mallow and hardware stores fill out the top four. In Dublin, Cork and Galway it takes more work, for longer. In our Longford study, 28 of the 102 top-three spots on the map went to businesses with fewer than 10 reviews. See SEO in Longford. We ran the same check in Cork, Tullamore, Thurles and Nenagh.
  • Places are described in different waysDublin postal districts, townlands, towns and counties. Your service areas and pages should match how customers describe where they live.
  • Rural addresses need careShared townland addresses put pins in the wrong place. An Eircode and a check of the pin fix most of it. See the best business directories in Ireland.
  • Irish words win Irish searchesPeople here search for a boiler service, a solicitor or a creche, not wording borrowed from American templates.
  • Google’s category names are differentSome US categories don’t exist here, and when we checked in October 2026 there was no Solicitor category. See choosing your category.
  • Fake reviews are illegalThe Consumer Rights Act 2022 bans them, on top of Google’s own rules. Build reviews the honest way: how to get more Google reviews.

Local SEO and Google’s AI answers

Google’s AI Overviews reached Ireland in late March 2025, and AI Mode followed in October 2025. They don’t replace local SEO. They’re built from the same things: your Google profile, your reviews, your website and what other sites say about you.

An AI Overview for a question about boiler service costs in Ireland. Google gives the answer (1) and links the website it took it from (2), blurred here.

So the work doesn’t change. Clear service pages answer the questions people ask. Consistent details stop Google mixing you up with someone else. And recent reviews give it something to say about you. Google has also launched Ask Maps, which answers questions about a business with AI. It started in the US and India in March 2026 and has since spread to many more countries. Questions people ask

Something else on your mind? Email info@leadsireland.com.

What is local SEO?

Everything that helps your business show up when people nearby search for what you do. That means your Google Business Profile, your website’s pages, your reviews and your listings on other sites.

How long does local SEO take?

Technical fixes are done within the first week. On an established website, about a month is usually enough to start getting quality leads. On a new website, 2 to 3 months is a safe timeline. Busy areas like Dublin can take longer.

Can I do local SEO myself?

Yes, especially the basics: your Google profile, a page for each service, reviews and consistent details. The guides here walk you through each one.

Is local SEO different from normal SEO?

It’s the same foundations, plus the map. Local SEO adds your Google Business Profile, reviews and location signals, because Google weighs distance and local reputation for searches with local intent.

Do I need a website for local SEO?

You can appear on the map without one. But a website with a page for each service helps you rank for more searches. It also shows up in the results below the map. And it gives customers somewhere to check you out before they ring.

Does local SEO work if I don’t have a shopfront?

Yes. Service-area businesses can have a Google Business Profile with the address hidden. They tend to rank best close to the address they verified with, so service pages for the towns you cover matter more.

Do Google’s AI answers replace local SEO?

No. Google builds them from the same things local SEO works on: your profile, your reviews, your website and what other sites say about you. Good local SEO is how you show up in them.
