What Google shows when someone in Tullamore searches
On 26 October 2026, we searched Google for 15 kinds of business with “Tullamore”, signed out of Google. Three things competed for the click.
An AI Overview
A written answer that names businesses. It showed for 12 of our 15 searches, sometimes above the map and sometimes below it.
The map
The top three businesses, then more. Google decides them from your profile, your distance from the searcher and your reviews.
Ten ordinary results
Websites, directories and Facebook. This is where your own website competes.

Each step below works on one or more of the three. Do them in order, because each one makes the next count for more.
Step 1: Get your Google Business Profile right
Your profile decides the map. Google says map results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence. It also says you can’t pay for a better spot (Google’s local ranking help page).
Use your real name. Don’t add “Tullamore” unless it’s on your sign and your invoices. Google’s rules don’t allow extra keywords. See how to get your business on Google Maps.
Pick the most specific main category. In our Maps check, Google showed one vet practice as a farm shop and one solicitor’s firm as a conveyancer. See choosing your Google Business Profile category.
Add extra categories that are true. One carpentry and building firm with 26 reviews came first for “roofer”, “builder” and “carpenter”. Google showed it as a roofing contractor in two searches and a construction company in the third.
List every service, in the words customers use. “Boiler service”, not “heating solutions”.
Put the pin on your door. Add your Eircode in the postcode field. Tullamore’s Eircodes start with R35. If Maps can’t find it, see Eircode not showing on Google Maps.
Set a service area if you go to customers. Name the towns you really cover, like Clara, Daingean and Killeigh. See Google Business Profile without a shopfront.
Keep your hours right. Set special hours for every bank holiday, so nobody calls to a closed door. Or let our Google Business Profile management keep all of this up to date.
Step 2: Get past the middle business on the map
Reviews are the part of prominence you can work on every week. Aim for the middle business in the top three for your search, not the leader.
Those numbers come from our check of 35 Google Maps searches in Tullamore. The bar depends on what you do. Our page on SEO in Tullamore has a checker with the numbers for 32 kinds of business.
- Ask every customerNot just the happy ones. A direct link or a QR code makes it easy. See how to get more Google reviews.
- Ask for a line about the job“Fixed our boiler in Clara the same day” helps more than five stars on their own. See how to ask for a Google review.
- Reply to every reviewGood or bad, and calmly. See how to reply to a bad Google review.
- Never buy themFake reviews break Google’s rules and Irish law. The Consumer Rights Act 2022 bans them.
Step 3: Give each service its own page
The ten ordinary results under the map are where your website competes. We sorted all 148 of them, across our 15 searches.
- Trades lose the results to directoriesFor plumbers, electricians, builders and painters, directories held 22 of 40 results. The firms’ own websites held 11.
- Professionals hold their ownFor solicitors, dentists and physios, the firms’ own websites held 20 of 28 results.
- The map and the results go together27 of the 45 businesses in the map’s top three also had their own website on page one. For dentists, solicitors, physios and car dealers, all three did. For plumbers, none did.
- Yelp is everywhereYelp showed for 14 of the 15 searches, and Golden Pages for 8. Claim both, with the same name, address and phone number as your Google profile.
So build a page for each main service, not one page for everything. Name Tullamore and the places you cover. Add real photos of jobs, your prices if you can, and a phone number at the top. Then link your Google profile to it. See how to write a service page that ranks.
Step 4: Give Google’s AI something to say about you
Google’s AI Overview showed for 12 of our 15 searches, and named a business first in 11 of them. It doesn’t just copy the map.
- Websites get namedIn 5 of those 11 searches, the business named first wasn’t in the map’s top three. Four of the five had their own website on page one.
- The answer changesWhen we searched “plumber tullamore” again, the AI named a different plumber first. Both times it was a firm outside the map’s top three, with its own website.
- It reads like a profileFor plumbers, the AI listed the first firm’s services, its RGI registration and its contact details. That’s the kind of detail a good website spells out.
Google says there’s nothing special to do to appear in its AI features. Pages that can show in its normal results are the ones it can use (Google’s guidance on AI features). So put your services, your credentials, the places you cover and how to reach you on your website, in plain words. Then make every listing say the same.
AI answers change often. These are what Google showed on 26 October 2026.
Step 5: Get mentioned in Tullamore
Prominence also comes from what other sites say about you. In Tullamore, start with these.
- The Chamber’s directoryTullamore & District Chamber lists its members in a members directory on its website.
- Local newsThe Tullamore Tribune and Offaly Express. A real story about your business is a genuine local mention.
- Clubs and events you backA sponsor’s mention from a club or from the Tullamore Show counts too.
- The big directoriesGolden Pages, Yelp, Bing Places and Apple Business, all matching your Google profile. See the best business directories in Ireland and is Golden Pages worth it?
Step 6: Measure calls, not rankings
Google measures distance from the person searching. So searching from your own kitchen tells you very little.
Search from where your customers are. Ask a few customers in Clara, Daingean or the town centre to send you a screenshot.
Watch your profile’s Performance section. Calls, direction requests and website clicks matter more than any single position.
Check monthly, not daily. Map results move around all the time. Look for the trend.

Mistakes that hold Tullamore businesses back
Adding “Tullamore” to your name
It breaks Google’s rules, and profiles that do it can be suspended. Put Tullamore in your service area and on your pages instead.
Leaving it to the directories
Directories held most of the results for trades. They send customers to a list of your competitors.
One page for everything
A single services page can’t rank for every job and every town. Give each main service its own page.
A copied page for every town
Pages that only swap the town name are what Google’s spam policies call doorways. Write area pages only where you have real jobs to show.
How long it takes
- Weeks
Profile fixes. A corrected category, accurate details and the pin on your door can make a difference within a few weeks.
- Months
New pages settle. New service pages usually take a few months to find their level.
- Ongoing
The gap closes. Passing businesses with hundreds of reviews takes steady work on reviews, pages and mentions.
