How to rank higher on Google Maps

Google ranks map results on relevance, distance and prominence. You can’t pay for a better spot, and you can’t move closer to every customer. But most Irish profiles we look at leave relevance and prominence on the table. Here’s what moves you up, and the order to do it in.

How do you rank higher on Google Maps?

Get your Google Business Profile exactly right first. Make sure it’s verified, with your real name and the most specific primary category. Add an accurate address or service areas, and honest hours. Then build prominence: a steady flow of genuine reviews, a website with a page for each service, and mentions on Irish sites. Google says local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence, and that there’s no way to pay for a better position.

What Google says decides the map

Google is unusually open about this. Its local ranking help page says results are mainly based on three things. And it says plainly that you can’t request or pay for a better local ranking.

Relevance

How well your profile matches what someone searched for.

Mostly in your hands: category, services, description and your website.

Distance

How far you are from the person searching, or from the place they name in the search.

Mostly out of your hands. Make sure your pin and areas are right.

Prominence

How well known your business is. Google mentions reviews, ratings and links to your website.

Takes months, and it’s where most businesses fall behind.

What you control, and what you don’t
FactorWhat you can doWhat you can’t do
RelevanceChoose the right categories, list every service, write a clear description, and give each main service a page on your websiteGet shown for work your profile and website don’t describe
DistanceUse your real address or service areas, with the pin on your doorMove closer to every searcher. Fake addresses get profiles suspended
ProminenceEarn a steady flow of genuine reviews, mentions on Irish sites and links to a strong websiteBuy it. Fake reviews, and paying someone to post them, break Google’s rules and Irish law. Rewarding customers for reviews breaks Google’s rules

The factors that matter most, according to local SEO experts

Google doesn’t publish a ranked list. So the best guide is Whitespark’s 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey, where local SEO specialists score what they see working. These were the top factors for the map:

Top map ranking factors in the 2026 survey, and what to do about each
RankFactorWhat to do
1Primary categoryChoose the most specific one for the work you want most. See choosing your Google Business Profile category
2How close you are to the searcherNothing to change. Check your pin and address are right
3Keywords in the business nameOnly if they’re really in your name. Adding them breaks Google’s rules
4An address in the town being searchedCan’t be faked. Virtual offices and PO boxes aren’t allowed
5Open at the time of the searchKeep hours accurate, and set special hours for every bank holiday
6A high Google rating (4 to 5 stars)Do good work and ask every customer, not just the happy ones
7Address shown, not hiddenOnly if customers visit you. See Google Business Profile without a shopfront
8Additional categoriesAdd the ones that describe what your business really is, and no more
9Number of Google reviews with textAsk customers to write a line about the job, not just tap the stars
10The pin in the right placeAdd your Eircode and drag the pin to your door. Eircode missing? See Eircode not showing on Google Maps
11Recent reviewsAsk after every job, all year round
13Clicks from the map resultsReal photos, a good rating and a name customers recognise
14A steady flow of reviews over timeA few every month beats a burst every year
15Your website’s name, address and phone match your profilePut them on your website exactly as they are on Google
Scores are expert opinion, not Google’s own list. Number 12, how close you are to the centre of town, is left out because there’s nothing you can do about it.

About keywords in your name

Keywords in the business name rank third, which is why you see profiles called things like “Emergency Plumber Cork”. Google’s guidelines say to use your real name, as it appears on your signage and invoices. Adding words that aren’t part of it can get your profile suspended. Competitors can also suggest an edit to strip the extra words out. If your trade and town really are in the name on your van and your invoices, that’s fine. Don’t rename yourself for Google. Already suspended? Our free Profile Rescue Kit finds the cause and writes your appeal.

Why your ranking looks different on your own phone

Distance is measured from the person searching. Search “plumber” from your own kitchen and you may well be first. A customer five kilometres away sees a different three businesses, and someone across the county sees a different three again.

We saw this in our Longford study: an electrician that came 6th for Longford came 1st for searches in Edgeworthstown and Granard. See SEO in Longford. Our pages on Cork, Tullamore, Thurles and Nenagh cover the towns around each one too.

Google Maps results for plumber searched from Cork city: three businesses, all with Plumber as their category; names, addresses, phone numbers and reviews blurredGoogle Maps results for plumber searched from Mallow: one Plumber, then a kitchen supply store and two hardware stores; names, addresses, phone numbers and reviews blurred
The same search, “plumber”, from two places. From Cork city, all three results are plumbers. From Mallow, one plumber shows, then a kitchen supplier and two hardware stores. Names, addresses, phone numbers and reviews blurred.

That’s distance and relevance working together. With few plumbers close to Mallow, Google fills the list with the nearest businesses that are loosely related. Where competition is that thin, a complete, well-reviewed profile can stand out quickly.

So checking from home tells you very little. Do this instead:

  1. 1
Search from where your customers areAsk a few customers or friends in different towns

Have them search your main service, like “electrician” or “electrician Navan”, and send you a screenshot.

  2. 2
Or use a grid rank trackerIt checks your position from points across your area

Tools such as Local Falcon, BrightLocal and Whitespark show a map of where you rank well and where you drop off.

  3. 3
Check monthly, not dailyMap results move around all the time

One search proves nothing. Look for the trend over a few months.

  4. 4
Watch what the profile brings inCalls, direction requests and website clicks

Your profile’s Performance section shows these. They matter more than any single position.

An order of work that moves you up

In this order, because each step makes the next one count for more.

  1. Get the basics exactly right. Make sure it’s verified, with your real name and the most specific primary category. Add an accurate address or service areas, and put the pin on your door. Set honest hours, with special hours for bank holidays. See how to get your business on Google Maps and choosing your Google Business Profile category.

  2. Fill in everything that applies. Add every service in the words customers use, and a clear description of up to 750 characters. Pick the attributes that fit, and add real photos of your team, premises and work.

  3. Build a steady flow of reviews. Ask every customer, make it easy with a direct link or QR code, and reply to every review, good or bad. See how to get more Google reviews and replying to bad reviews.

  4. Give each main service a page on your website. Link your profile to your site, and use the same name, address and phone number on both. See how to write a service page that ranks.

  5. Earn mentions on Irish sites. Accurate listings on the directories that matter, and genuine local links from clubs you sponsor, suppliers and local news. See the best business directories in Ireland.

  6. Report spam, fairly. If a competitor has added keywords to their name, select Suggest an edit on their Google Maps listing. If a listing is fake altogether, Google has a Business Redressal Complaint Form for that. Removing spam listings is in the experts’ top 20 factors.

  7. Measure from where your customers are. Monthly, from several places in your area, alongside the calls and direction requests your profile brings in.

The Edit information panel on Google Maps, with tabs for place name, category, location and hours; place name and account blurred
Select Suggest an edit on any Google Maps listing, then Change name or other details, to correct its name, category, location or hours. Google reviews the change before it goes live. Place name and account blurred.

Myths that waste your time

Myth

Add keywords to your name

It can lift a profile for a while, and it’s one of the most common reasons profiles get suspended.

Myth

A profile for every town

One profile per real, staffed location. Extra profiles for towns you only travel to break Google’s rules.

Myth

Post every day

Posts show customers you’re active, but Google doesn’t list them among the things that improve local ranking.

Myth

Buy reviews, or only ask happy customers

Both break Google’s review policy, and fake reviews have been illegal in Ireland under the Consumer Rights Act 2022 since 29 November 2022.

Myth

Move your pin closer to town

Your pin has to be where your business really is. Moving it to a busier area is misrepresenting your location.

Myth

Pay for a guaranteed top spot

Google says there’s no way to pay for a better local ranking. Anyone guaranteeing one is selling something that doesn’t exist.

How long it takes to move up

  1. Days

Edits go live. Google says changes to your profile can take up to three days to appear.

  2. Weeks

Fixes show. A corrected category, address or hours can make a difference within a few weeks. Google says a new business can take up to a month to appear in rankings.

  3. Months

The gap closes. Passing established competitors with more reviews and a stronger website usually takes months of steady work.

When to get help

If the basics are right and you’re still stuck behind the same three businesses, the gap is usually prominence: reviews, links and your website. That takes steady work over months, and it’s what our local SEO and Google Business Profile management are built around. Both come with every monthly SEO plan, from €250 a month plus VAT. The free audit below compares you with the businesses ahead of you. More in our local SEO guides.

Questions people ask

Something else on your mind? Email info@leadsireland.com.

How long does it take to rank higher on Google Maps?

Fixing a wrong category or an incomplete profile can make a difference within weeks. Climbing past established competitors with more reviews usually takes months of steady work.

Can I pay Google to rank higher on Maps?

No. Google says there’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Ads can appear above the map, but they’re a separate product, labelled Sponsored, and don’t change where your profile ranks.

Why am I top when I search, but customers can’t find me?

Because Google measures distance from the person searching, and you’re close to yourself. Check from other places in your area, or ask customers to send you a screenshot.

What is the most important Google Maps ranking factor?

Local SEO experts rank the primary category first, in Whitespark’s 2026 survey. Distance from the searcher comes second, but you can’t change that, which makes your category the most important thing you control.

Do Google posts help my ranking?

Posts show customers you’re active, which is useful. Google doesn’t list them among the things that improve local ranking, though, so they won’t make up for a wrong category or too few reviews.

Does my website affect my Maps ranking?

Yes. Google says prominence includes information from across the web, such as links to your business. And a website with a clear page for each service gives Google more to match against searches.

Should I show my address to rank higher?

Only if customers visit you there. An address that’s shown ranks a little better in expert surveys. But Google’s guidelines say service-area businesses should hide their address, and a suspension costs far more.

Are fake reviews illegal in Ireland?

Yes. The Consumer Rights Act 2022, in force since 29 November 2022, bans fake reviews. They also break Google’s policies and can get reviews removed or your profile restricted.
