The searches your patients type
People search for the problem, the treatment or the place. These are the kinds of searches a dental practice should be winning:
Most of these come from people choosing a practice for years, not for one visit. They read reviews closely and check your website for treatments, prices and whether you’ll see them soon.
What it takes to make the top three on the map: we checked 12 Irish towns
On 23 October 2026 we searched “dentist” and the town in 12 Irish towns, from Dublin to Letterkenny. We noted the three practices Google showed on the map and the seven that came next. The three on the map had a median of 265 reviews. The next seven had 40.
- Dentists need more reviews than any business we checkedOf the 22 searches on our industries page, dentists had the highest bar. Here, across 12 towns, the three on the map had a median of 265 reviews. For plumbers, across 16 towns, it was 61.
- The bar depends on the townThe middle practice on the map had 51 reviews in Letterkenny and about 2,800 in Dublin. It had 60 in Athlone, 131 in Ennis and 272 in Cork. Limerick and Drogheda were at 450.
- Close and relevant can beat bigIn Dublin, a practice with 202 reviews and a 4.0 rating made the three. The next seven had a median of 609. In Athlone, a clinic with about 1,200 reviews came eighth. The most-reviewed practice made the map in 8 of 12 towns.
- Stars didn’t separate them muchThe 36 on the map averaged 4.7 stars, and 4 were below 4.5. The number of reviews, and what they say, stood out more than the score.
- Every practice on the map had a website and showed its addressAll 36 did. Patients come to you, so the address belongs on the profile. The website is where they check treatments and prices.
- Dentist or Dental clinic27 of the 36 used Dentist as their main category and 9 used Dental clinic. Google showed other categories, such as Cosmetic dentist or Orthodontist, when they matched the search, as you’ll see below.

Treatment searches change who shows up
We also searched “emergency dentist”, “teeth whitening” and “orthodontist” in six towns: Cork, Galway, Limerick, Kilkenny, Sligo and Mullingar. We compared the three on the map with the top three for “dentist” in the same towns.
| Search, in the same six towns | Median reviews of the three on the map | Of the 18, also in the top three for “dentist” |
|---|---|---|
| dentist + town | 290 | – |
| emergency dentist + town | 216 | 13 |
| teeth whitening + town | 216 | 11 |
| orthodontist + town | 121 | 5 |
- Emergencies mostly go to the usual practices13 of the 18 were already in the top three for “dentist”. None of the dental practices showed as open 24 hours, and in Cork a hospital emergency department came second.
- A category almost nobody usesGoogle’s list includes Emergency dental service, but none of the 58 listings we saw for “emergency dentist” showed it. If you offer emergency appointments, it’s a simple way to match the search.
- Whitening businesses compete with you4 of the 18 spots went to businesses that aren’t dental practices. Three were teeth whitening services and one a laser hair removal clinic. In Cork and Galway, a whitening service came first.
- Orthodontists are a separate mapOnly 5 of the 18 were also in the top three for “dentist”. In Mullingar, an orthodontic practice with no reviews came first.
- Google shows the category that matchesOne Limerick practice with about 450 reviews appeared as Dentist, Dental clinic, Cosmetic dentist or Orthodontist, depending on the search. Secondary categories let one practice match several searches.

What’s different for Irish dentists
- PRSI and medical card patients search for itUnder the Treatment Benefit Scheme, the State pays for a yearly oral exam at dentists on its panel. From 31 January 2026, it also pays €50 towards a scale and polish. Medical card holders get a yearly exam, extractions and two fillings a year from dentists in the DTSS. If you take either, say so on your profile and website. People search for exactly that.
- The Dental Council’s code covers your marketingIts code on public relations and communications covers how dentists use titles, patient testimonials, photographs and websites. Check featured reviews, before-and-after photos and any specialist wording against it before they go live.
- “Are you taking new patients?” comes firstIf you are, say so plainly on your profile and homepage, with how soon you can see someone.
- Irish words for Irish patientsScale and polish, PRSI, medical card, wisdom teeth, braces. Pages written the way patients here describe what they need match how they search.
Why you might not be showing up
- Fewer reviews than the practices above youThe three on the map had a median of 265 reviews, against 40 for the next seven. A steady flow from every patient, not a one-off push, is what closes that gap.
- Only one categoryWithout secondary categories like Cosmetic dentist, Orthodontist or Emergency dental service, Google has less to match with treatment searches.
- One page for every treatmentImplants, whitening, braces and emergencies each need their own page to rank. That page also answers the questions patients ask before they book. Our free topical map checker shows which pages you’re missing.
- Emergency slots nobody can seeIf your profile and website don’t show same-day or emergency appointments, people go to whoever does, even a hospital.
- No word on PRSI or medical cardsIf you take them and don’t say so, you’re missing people searching for exactly that.

How many Google reviews does a dentist need to get on the map?
Roughly as many as the middle practice in your town’s top three. Across 12 Irish towns, it ranged from 51 reviews in Letterkenny to about 2,800 in Dublin. The three on the map had a median of 265 reviews. The practices just below them had 40.
Why does a teeth whitening business show above my practice?
Because its category matches the search exactly. In our check, 4 of the 18 spots for “teeth whitening” went to businesses that aren’t dental practices. If you offer whitening, add Teeth whitening service as a secondary category and give whitening its own page.
Should I add Emergency dental service as a category?
If you offer emergency appointments, yes. It’s in Google’s list, but none of the 58 listings we saw for “emergency dentist” showed it. Back it up with emergency hours on your profile and a page that says how soon you can see someone.
Should I say I take PRSI and medical card patients?
If you do, yes. Say it on your profile and your website. The Treatment Benefit Scheme covers a yearly oral exam and part of a scale and polish at panel dentists. Medical card holders use dentists in the DTSS. People search for both.
Can I use patient testimonials and before-and-after photos?
Check the Dental Council’s code first. Its code on public relations and communications covers patient testimonials, photographs and websites. Google reviews on your profile are separate. You can ask every patient for one, as long as you don’t offer anything in return.
Which category should I choose on my Google profile?
Dentist or Dental clinic as the main one: 27 of the 36 practices on the map in our check used Dentist and 9 used Dental clinic. Then add secondary categories for the treatments you offer, such as Cosmetic dentist or Emergency dental service.
How long does SEO take for a dental practice?
Fixes to your Google profile and website start in week 1. On an established site, bookings usually pick up within about a month. Closing a big review gap takes longer, so the plan starts with a steady way to ask every patient.
How much does SEO cost for a dental practice?
Our plans are €250, €450 or €900 a month plus VAT, with no setup fee. Practices with more than one location usually suit Area dominance. It includes up to 2 locations, and each extra one is €200 a month. See all prices.
