The best business directories in Ireland, and which listings matter
A citation is any place online that lists your business name, address and phone number. In Ireland, a short list done properly beats hundreds of directories nobody visits. Here’s which ones matter, based on what actually shows up on Google here, and how to keep them right.

A local citation is any place online that shows your business name, address and phone number. SEOs call those three details your NAP. Google, Apple Maps, Facebook, goldenpages.ie and your trade register are all citations.
There are two kinds. Structured citations are listings with set boxes to fill in, like a directory profile. Unstructured citations are mentions in ordinary text, like a local news story or a club’s sponsor page. Both count, and both can carry the wrong details.
NMurphy Plumbing Ltd
Plumber in Ballincollig
AMain Street, Ballincollig, Co. Cork, P31 XXXX
P021 4XX 1234
Also on most listings: website, opening hours, category, photos, reviews
- NName: the one on your sign and invoices
- AAddress: written the same way every time, with your Eircode
- PPhone: one number you’ll keep
An example listing. These three details are what Google and your customers compare from one site to the next.
In Ireland, the address part has a twist: there’s no single official address for any building. That’s why your Eircode matters so much here, and why it gets its own section below.
Do citations still matter for local SEO?
Yes, but not the way they used to. Google says local ranking comes down to relevance, distance and prominence. Prominence takes in things like how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have. Accurate listings support that. Hundreds of extra ones don’t.
What citations do
- Put your correct number on sites customers already use
- Add to what Google knows about your business from across the web
- Bring in some calls directly, from sites like goldenpages.ie and Facebook
- Show you’re qualified, when the listing is on your trade register
What they don’t do
- Move you up the map on their own
- Work by volume: 300 junk directories add nothing
- Make up for a thin Google profile or website
Where citations really cost you is when they’re wrong. An old number or address, or your name spelled three ways, leaves Google unsure which details are right. It also sends customers to a phone nobody answers.
Which directories show up on Google in Ireland?
We checked 12 everyday local searches in Google’s Irish results on 18 October 2026, from “plumbers cork” to “dentist sligo”. Then we counted which directories made page one. Golden Pages, Facebook and Yelp turned up across most trades. The rest depend on your trade.
- goldenpages.iePlumbers, roofers, electricians, painters, gardeners, accountants, solicitors, locksmiths
- FacebookMostly trades and cleaners, low on page one
- YelpElectricians, solicitors, accountants, locksmiths, cleaners
- Trade directoriesOne each: plumbersinireland.ie, electriciansinireland.ie, tradesmen.ie, accountantdirectory.ie
- BarkPlumbers, painters, carpet cleaners
- Construction IrelandPlumbers and painters
- Health directoriesWhatClinic for a physio, Doctify for a dentist
- A regulator’s registerSafe Electric, for electricians
Normal results only, below the ads and the map. Results change from day to day and depend on where the searcher is.

Golden Pages led, on page one for 8 of the 12 searches. Whether its paid listing is worth the money is a separate question, answered in is Golden Pages worth it?
Where to list, in order
All of these are free to start with. Work down the list: each level matters a little less than the one above it.
1The mapsDo these first
Where most local searches end. Your Google Business Profile matters most: see how to get your business on Google Maps. Apple Business, which replaced Apple Business Connect in April 2026, controls how you show up in Apple Maps, Siri and Safari. Bing Places does the same for Bing and Bing Maps.
- Google Business Profile
- Apple Business
- Bing Places for Business
2The big general sites
A Facebook page showed up on page one for 7 of our 12 searches, and plenty of people check it before ringing. Take the free goldenpages.ie listing too.
- Facebook page
- goldenpages.ie (free listing)
- Yelp
3Your trade or professional register
Customers use registers to check you’re qualified, so make sure your entry is current and matches your other listings.
- Safe Electric
- RGI, for gas installers
- Law Society’s Find a Solicitor
- Dental Council register
4Directories that rank for your trade
Only the ones that show up when you search your own service and town. Skip the rest.
- Bark
- Construction Ireland
- Houzz
- WhatClinic
- Doctify
5Local organisations
Often real local links as well as listings.
- Chamber of commerce
- Business networks
- Clubs you sponsor

Get your address right: use your Eircode
Ireland has no single official address for any building. Your Eircode is the one fixed point, so build every listing’s address around it.
Eircode’s own help pages explain it: one building can have a postal address, a geographic address and older versions, all of them correct. Write yours one way on Google, another on Golden Pages and a third on Facebook, and you’ve made three listings that don’t match.

Look up your Eircode on the Eircode Finder (finder.eircode.ie) and copy the address exactly as it shows.
Use that address on every listing, with the Eircode: same order, same spelling, same county.
Use one phone number everywhere, ideally a landline or a business mobile you’ll keep for years.
If the business name in your Eircode address is wrong, ask An Post GeoDirectory to fix it. Eircode gets its addresses from GeoDirectory and can’t change them itself.
- Eircode
- A seven-character code for every address in the State: a three-character routing key and a four-character unique identifier
- Where the addresses come from
- An Post GeoDirectory, a subsidiary of An Post
- GeoDirectory
- Ireland’s register of addresses matched to their exact locations. Over 2.2 million postal addresses have an Eircode
- Wrong business name in your address?
- Contact An Post GeoDirectory. Eircode can’t change it

How to find your existing listings
Before adding new listings, find the old ones. Most businesses have a few they’ve forgotten about, often with an old number. It takes about half an hour:
Search your business name in quotes with your town, like “Murphy Plumbing” Ballincollig.
Search every phone number you’ve used, old mobiles too, in quotes.
If you’ve moved, search your old address.
Note each site in a simple sheet: the name, address and phone it shows, and whether they’re right.
Fix the wrong ones, starting with the maps, then any site that shows up on page one. Claim the listing if you can, or ask the site to update or remove it.
What to avoid
- Packages of 100 or 300 directoriesMost of those sites get no visitors from Ireland, and each one is another place your details can go out of date. Google’s advice on hiring an SEO warns against anyone offering to submit your site to thousands of search engines, calling it typically useless.
- Bought linksPaying for links breaks Google’s spam policies. Offered a backlink package? Our guide to citations vs backlinks in Ireland shows what the fee should buy.
- Duplicate listingsGoogle’s rules allow one Business Profile per business. Two listings split your reviews and confuse customers, so merge or remove the extra one.
- Different versions of your nameGoogle asks you to use your name as it appears on your signage, stationery and other branding. “Murphy Plumbing”, “Murphys Plumbing Ltd” and “M.P.H. Services” look like three businesses, so pick the one customers know and use it everywhere.

What is a local citation?
Any place online that shows your business name, address and phone number, such as Google, Apple Maps, Facebook, goldenpages.ie or a trade register. Each one helps customers find you and adds to what Google knows about your business.
What does NAP mean?
Name, address and phone number: the three details that should match on every listing. In Ireland, include your Eircode in the address.
Do citations still matter for local SEO?
Less on their own than they once did, but wrong or conflicting details still cost you. Google’s local ranking takes in information from across the web, and customers ring whatever number they find. Accurate listings on the sites that matter beat a large number of listings.
Which Irish directories should my business be on?
Start with Google Business Profile, Apple Business for Apple Maps, Bing Places, a Facebook page and a free goldenpages.ie listing. Then add your trade or professional register and any directory that shows up on Google when you search your own service and town.
Are free business listing sites in Ireland worth it?
The big free ones are: Google Business Profile, Apple Business, Bing Places, a Facebook page and goldenpages.ie. After that, only add free sites that show up on Google for your trade and town. A listing nobody sees is just one more place for your details to go out of date.
Should I pay for directory listings?
Only where the directory shows up on Google for your searches and you can count the calls it brings. Most of the value comes from free listings kept accurate.
How many citations does a small business need?
There’s no magic number. For most Irish local businesses, 15 to 25 accurate listings on sites people actually use is plenty. A few hundred low-quality directories adds risk, not rankings.
Should my Eircode be in my listings?
Yes. Ireland has no single official address for a building, so your Eircode is the most reliable way to show exactly where you are. Copy your address from the Eircode Finder and use it the same way everywhere.
