Local citations vs backlinks in Ireland: what are you paying for?
A quote to fix 15 Irish business listings and a quote for 100 backlinks describe two different jobs. A citation shows your business details. A backlink lets someone click through to your website. One listing can be both. Before you pay, find out where the work will appear, who can edit it afterwards, and whether you’re paying for work, for advertising or for links meant to push up your rankings.

A local citation is any mention of your business name, address and phone number online, with or without a link. A backlink is a clickable link from another website to yours, with or without your address. Most Irish directory listings are both. A news story that links to your website is usually only a backlink.
| Where it appears | Shows your name, address and phone? | Links to your website? |
|---|---|---|
| A Golden Pages entry with a Website button | Yes | Yes |
| A Golden Pages entry with only Directions | Yes | No |
| A local news story about your new premises | Not usually | Often |
| Your Google Business Profile | Yes | Yes, once you add your website |
We checked. In a Golden Pages search for plumbers in Cork, 16 of the first 20 entries had a Website link. The other four only offered directions. Those four are citations without a backlink.
So don’t treat them as two separate products. Ask what each item in a quote will show, and whether it links to you. For which listings matter in Ireland, see our guide to the best business directories in Ireland.
Golden Pages search checked on 1 November 2026.
When fixing your Irish listings should come first
If your details have changed, fix what’s already out there before paying for anything new. New links won’t help if customers find your old phone number.
Example: a Cork business with a new phone number
A Cork plumber changes mobile number. The new one is on the website and Google profile, but the old one is still on Golden Pages and a few other directories. Customers who ring it get no answer. The money should go on finding and correcting those listings first, and on getting back into accounts nobody can log in to. Later, if there’s a real story or a useful page on the website, outreach can be costed as a separate job.
An example to show the order of work, not a client result.
- Find every old entrySearch your old phone number, old address and old business name, not just the current ones.
- Correct what customers seePhone, address, opening hours and website, written the same way everywhere. Add your Eircode wherever the site accepts one.
- Deal with duplicatesMerge or remove extra listings, so customers and Google see one business.
- Get access backLogins in your name or your business email, so you can make changes yourself later.
Ask any provider to check your existing listings before they quote for new ones. If your address is the problem on the map, see Eircode not showing on Google Maps.
When an outreach quote is worth considering
Outreach is work to get other websites to mention you: local papers, trade sites, suppliers, clubs and associations. It only works if there’s a reason for them to say yes. Before you pay, ask three things.
- What will they pitch?A useful page on your site, or a real story like a new premises, an apprenticeship or a community project. “We’ll get you links” isn’t a pitch.
- Who reads those sites?Your customers, your trade or your area. Irish relevance comes from the readers and the subject, not from .ie at the end of the address.
- Who decides? On a real publication, an editor decides what gets published. If a provider promises a set number of links by a set date, ask how they can.
Outreach suits a business with something worth writing about. If you’re not there yet, your listings and your own pages usually come first.
What the Irish fee actually pays for
One quote can mix four different costs. Split them out before you compare.
| Cost | What it buys | When it’s finished |
|---|---|---|
| The provider’s work | Finding, writing, submitting and correcting listings, or pitching websites | When the agreed list is live and handed over |
| Directory advertising | A bigger or higher listing on that directory | When you stop paying |
| Membership | A chamber’s or trade body’s benefits, one of which may be a listing | At renewal |
| Monitoring | Checks that your listings stay correct | Ongoing, if you agree it |
Three real Irish offers show how different these are:
As published on each website on 1 November 2026. VAT wasn’t stated on the agency’s page or the Chamber’s. These are different jobs, not an Irish average or like-for-like quotes.
The same agency sells a separate €497 job to audit and disavow harmful links. That’s a once-off clean-up, not its monthly price. A once-off listings job has a clear finish line: an agreed list of listings, live and handed over. Monthly link building needs a plan that says what happens each month.
If someone charges to set up your free Golden Pages listing, ask what work the fee covers. Paying Golden Pages itself for a premium listing is advertising: our guide is Golden Pages worth it? covers when that pays off. Lead sites are different again. On Bark you pay to contact leads, not for a listing, as we explain in is Bark worth it?
Paying for work vs paying for ranking links
Paying someone to do listings or outreach is paying for work. Paying a website to link to you so you rank higher is buying links. Google’s spam policies list “buying or selling links for ranking purposes” as link spam.
The same policy names “low-quality directory or bookmark site links”. That’s the risk in packages of 100 or 300 directories. A link doesn’t become safe because it was submitted by hand, or because it’s on a .ie website.
Advertising and sponsorship are allowed. If you pay for a listing, an advert or a sponsorship, Google asks for the link to be marked as sponsored, and says nofollow is “still an acceptable way” to flag it (Google’s guide to qualifying outbound links). A sponsor page for the GAA club you support is fine. The link to you should simply be marked that way.
Links don’t decide the map on their own either. Google says local results depend mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that “there’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking” (how Google ranks local results). Links and reviews feed prominence, but no number of links buys a position.
What to ask before buying a links or listings package in Ireland
Listing work and outreach should be judged differently:
| Question | Listing work | Outreach |
|---|---|---|
| What’s the job? | Find, correct, claim or create business listings | Find a real reason for relevant websites to mention you |
| What proof do I get? | Live listing pages, the corrected details and your logins | The pitches or placements agreed, live pages, and which of your pages they link to |
| What does the number count? | Submissions, live listings or updates? | Pitches, links or different websites? |
| What carries on later? | Changes after a move, renewals or monitoring, if agreed | More research and pitching, under an agreed monthly plan |
Then get these answers in writing:
- Which websites, and why?Named sites, with the reason their readers fit your Irish customers. Ask for examples.
- What gets fixed first?Which existing listings will be corrected or claimed before any new ones are made.
- What’s the full cost?Their work, any directory or publisher fees, memberships, renewals, the minimum term and whether VAT (23% in Ireland) is included.
- Who owns the accounts?Logins in your name, and what you keep if you leave.
- What if a site says no?Rejected submissions, slow publishing and listings that disappear later.
- What will the report show?Ask for a sample before you sign.

What a useful links and listings report shows
A count of links tells you very little. Each line of a good report shows where the work is, what it says and whether it’s live. Something like this:
| Where | Work done | Status | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Golden Pages | Old phone number corrected, Eircode added | Live, with a link to the listing | Login in your name |
| Bing Places | New listing with matching details | Submitted, waiting for verification | Your own Microsoft account |
| Local news site | Story on the new premises, linking to your services page | Published, with the live page | Not needed |
An example layout, not a client report.
Keep “submitted” and “live” apart: a submission can be rejected or never published. For outreach, each line should name the website, the page that links to you and the page it links to. Where it can be measured, visits from those links and the leads they bring go in a separate part of the report. Nobody can honestly promise you leads or a ranking position from links.
How Leads Ireland handles links and Irish listings
Our citation building service starts with what’s already out there. We find old and duplicate listings and fix them, then add the ones worth having. The Irish listings pack is €149 once-off plus VAT: 15 Irish directory listings with matching details, plus Bing Places and Apple Business Connect.
For links, we look for genuine ones from relevant Irish websites: clubs you sponsor, suppliers and partners, local and trade news, chambers and associations. We never buy links, and we promise the work, not a ranking.

Questions people ask
Something else on your mind? Email info@leadsireland.com.
Are local citations the same as backlinks?
They overlap. A citation shows your business name, address and phone number. A backlink is a link someone can click to reach your website. Many Irish directory listings are both, and an article can link to you without showing your address.
Can I pay someone to set up my free listings?
Yes. The listing is free, but the research, writing, corrections and account set-up are work you can pay for. Ask which parts are free at the directory and which work the fee covers.
Does paying for a directory listing count as buying links?
Not if you’re paying for advertising and the link is marked as sponsored or nofollow, as Google asks. Paying for a link so you rank higher breaks Google’s spam policies, however the quote describes it.
Will more Irish links guarantee a higher place on Google Maps?
No. Google says local results depend mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that there’s no way to pay it for a better local ranking. Links and reviews feed prominence, but they don’t guarantee a position.
Is once-off citation work or monthly link building better?
They’re different jobs. Once-off listings work ends when an agreed list of listings is live and handed over. Monthly link building only makes sense with a clear plan for each month and a real reason for other sites to link to you.
What should an Irish link building report include?
For each link: the website, the live page, the page on your site it points to and the date it went live. Submitted and live should be listed separately. Visits and leads from those links belong in a separate part of the report.
