How long does SEO take in Ireland?

Technical fixes take about a week. On an established website, about a month is usually enough to start getting quality leads. On a new website, 2 to 3 months is a safe timeline. In a small Irish town it can be quicker, and in Dublin, Cork or Galway city it takes longer. Here’s what to expect, month by month, with what we found when we checked Irish towns.

What a typical first year looks like

Your timeline depends on whether your website is established, what’s wrong now and who you’re up against. So treat this as a guide, not a promise.

  1. Week 1Fix what is broken

Audit the site and the Google Business Profile. Fix blocked pages, wrong categories, missing details and anything stopping Google reading the site.

Technical fixes are done within the first week
  2. Weeks 2 to 4Build the missing pages

A page for each main service and the towns that matter, plus a steady flow of reviews.

Google usually picks up new pages within a day or two to a few weeks
  3. About 1 monthFirst leads on an established site

If your website has been around a while, the fixes and new pages usually start bringing quality leads within about a month.

Calls and forms tracked, so you see what comes in
  4. 2 to 3 monthsFirst leads on a new site

A brand-new website gives Google nothing to go on yet, so 2 to 3 months is a safe timeline for quality leads.

Impressions rising in Search Console, then the first leads
  5. Months 3 to 12Competitive searches

Busy city searches and competitive trades take longer, and need more pages, reviews and links than the businesses above you.

Why it varies so much

“How long” depends far more on your starting point than on the agency. Rough timescales by situation:

Your situationWhat usually happensRough timescale
Google Business Profile with the wrong category or missing detailsOnce Google accepts the changes, the profile can start showing for more searchesDays to a few weeks

How long it takes depends on your town

The bar on Google’s map is set by the businesses already there. In a small Irish town, that can be a handful of reviews. In a city, it can be hundreds. We checked.

2reviews held by the middle accountant on Tullamore’s map
28 of 102top-three spots in Longford went to businesses with fewer than 10 reviews
222the smallest review count in either Dublin top three we checked
  • Small county townsIn Longford, 28 of the 102 top-three spots on the map went to businesses with fewer than 10 reviews. See SEO in Longford.
  • It depends on your trade, tooIn Tullamore, the middle accountant on the map had 2 reviews, the middle electrician 57 and the middle hairdresser 63. See SEO in Tullamore.
  • Cities take longerThe three electricians on the map for “electrician cork” had 159 to 333 reviews. Ten minutes outside the city, in Blarney, first place had none. See how to rank as an electrician in Cork.
  • Even busy trades have gapsWhen we searched “boiler service” in 14 Irish towns, a firm with fewer than 20 reviews made the top three in 10 of them. See how to get more boiler service customers.

Reviews aren’t the only thing Google looks at, but they’re the part that takes longest. If you collect 4 new reviews a month, passing a middle business with 2 reviews takes a month. Passing one with 57 takes over a year if you’re starting from zero. That’s why the same work can show results in weeks in one town and take a year in another. Our guide on how to get more Google reviews covers the honest ways to speed that up.

What speeds it up, and what slows it down

  • Fixing blockers firstA noindex tag or a wrong category can hold everything else back. Fix them before writing anything new.
  • A clear page for each serviceGoogle ranks pages. Good service pages give it something specific to rank.
  • A steady flow of reviewsReviews help local rankings, and a regular trickle beats a sudden burst.
  • A redesign or move without redirectsOld page addresses that now show errors lose what they had built up.
  • Copy-paste town pagesNear-identical pages with the town name swapped can count as doorway pages under Google’s spam policies.
  • Changing everything every monthGive changes time to show before rewriting them.

How to tell it’s working before rankings move

  • Pages are indexedSearch Console shows your new pages as indexed. That’s step one, and it usually happens within weeks.
  • Impressions are risingIn Search Console’s Performance report, impressions (how often you appeared in results) climb before clicks and calls do.
  • Your profile is busierYour Google Business Profile’s Performance section shows calls, direction requests and website clicks month by month.
  • Leads are trackedCalls and forms from your website counted, so you can see what SEO actually brings in, not just where you rank.

Be wary of anyone promising page one by a date

Google says no one can guarantee a number one ranking, and that an SEO who guarantees first place is a reason to find someone else. A fast, guaranteed result usually means a search nobody makes, or tactics that put your site at risk. More in how to choose an SEO agency.

It’s also why we judge results on leads rather than rankings. Technical fixes are done in the first week. An established website usually starts bringing quality leads within about a month, and a new one within 2 to 3 months. Every SEO plan tracks calls, forms and WhatsApp messages, so you can see the leads come in.

How long does SEO take to work?

Technical fixes are done within the first week. On an established website, about a month is usually enough to start getting quality leads. On a new website, 2 to 3 months is a safe timeline. Competitive searches in big cities can take longer.

Is SEO quicker in a small Irish town?

Often. The businesses on the map in small towns often have only a handful of reviews: in our Longford check, 28 of 102 top-three spots went to businesses with fewer than 10. In Dublin, the smallest count in the top three we checked was 222, so it takes far longer to catch up.

How long does it take Google to index a new page?

Google says it can take anywhere from a day or two to a few weeks. Submitting a sitemap in Search Console helps Google find new pages.

Why haven’t I seen results after a month?

On an established website, a month is usually enough to start seeing quality leads. If you haven’t, check that your pages are indexed, that impressions are rising in Search Console, and that calls and forms are being tracked. A new website usually needs 2 to 3 months.

Will Google Ads make my SEO work faster?

No. Ads can bring leads from day one while you pay for them. But Google says advertising has no effect on your position in its normal search results.

Do I have to keep paying for SEO forever?

Not necessarily. Once your pages are built and your profile is in good shape, many small businesses keep things going themselves with reviews and the odd update. Competitive areas usually need ongoing work to hold their place.
