Is Golden Pages worth it in 2026? An honest look for Irish businesses

Yes for the free listing: goldenpages.ie was still on page one of Google for 8 of the 12 local searches we checked. A paid premium listing only pays off for some trades in some towns, and only if you can count the calls it brings. Here’s how to tell which you are.

The short answer

It depends which part of Golden Pages you mean. There are three, and each gets a different answer.

Yes

The free listing

Every business in Ireland can have a free basic listing on goldenpages.ie. It takes a few minutes and puts your correct number on a site that still ranks on Google for plenty of local searches.

Maybe

A paid premium listing

Only if goldenpages.ie shows up on Google for your trade and town, and you can count the calls it brings. Miss either one and you’re paying on faith.

Ask first

The printed book

FCR Media still lists print among its channels, though it said in 2017 it would stop printing the book. Ask what print, if any, you’d get in your area, and how you’d know if anyone rang you from it.

What is Golden Pages?

Golden Pages is Ireland’s business directory: the Irish version of the Yellow Pages. It began as a printed book of business phone numbers and now lives mostly online at goldenpages.ie. FCR Media, a Dublin company, publishes it.

Each business is listed under a category, like plumbers or accountants, and a town, with its phone number, address and services. People find those listings by searching goldenpages.ie, or by searching Google and landing on a Golden Pages page for their trade and area.

FCR Media also runs getlocal.ie and phonebook.ie, and sells websites, SEO, Google Ads management and Facebook ads to small businesses. So when a Golden Pages rep rings, the offer might be a listing, a website or a bundle of both. It helps to know which one you’re being quoted for.

From phone book to website: a short history

Golden Pages has changed hands several times. Knowing who runs it now helps when you’re weighing up a sales call.

  1. Around 1970

The first book. By 2011 the directory had been around for over 40 years, and the 2018/19 edition would have been its 50th.

  2. By 1999

Golden Pages Online lets people search the directory on the web, not just in the book.

  3. 2002

Eircom sells its majority stake to Dutch publisher VNU, which already owned the rest.

  4. 2010

Truvo Ireland publishes Golden Pages and Eircom’s phone books.

  5. 2011

Truvo sells the Irish business to a company backed by BaltCap, a Baltic private equity firm. It’s renamed FCR Media in 2012.

  6. 2017

Examinership, then a buyout. An interim examiner is appointed in July. In November the Irish management buys the business and keeps the FCR Media name.

  7. Today

Still on page one of Google for many local searches: 8 of the 12 we checked in October 2026.

Does goldenpages.ie still show up on Google?

Often, yes. We checked 12 everyday local searches in Google’s Irish results on 18 October 2026. goldenpages.ie was on page one for 8 of them, and in the top three for 4.

  1. “plumbers cork”1
  2. “painter decorator waterford”2
  3. “roofers limerick”3
  4. “landscape gardener galway”3
  5. “electrician galway”7
  6. “accountant limerick”7
  7. “solicitors athlone”10
  8. “locksmith dublin”10
  9. “window cleaning dublin”Not on page one
  10. “carpet cleaning cork”Not on page one
  11. “dentist sligo”Not on page one
  12. “physiotherapist kilkenny”Not on page one

Positions count each website once, in the normal results below the ads and the map. Results change from day to day and depend on where the searcher is.

Google results for plumbers cork: the map comes first, then goldenpages.ie is the first normal result
What one of our checks looked like: “plumbers cork” in October 2026. Google’s map comes first, then goldenpages.ie is the first normal result.

There’s a pattern. Golden Pages did best for trades people search by town: plumbers, painters, roofers and landscape gardeners. It didn’t make page one for either cleaning search or either health search we tried. So the answer depends on your trade and your town, which is why the next step matters.

How to check your own trade and town

Our 12 searches are a sample. What counts is the search your own customers type, and it takes two minutes to check:

  1. Open a private or incognito window, so your own browsing doesn’t change the results.

  2. Search like a customer: your trade and your town, like “electrician Navan”. Keep the town in the search, because Google tailors results to where you are.

  3. Skip the ads and the map. Count down the normal results until you reach goldenpages.ie.

  4. Repeat for your main services and the two or three towns you cover most.

How we counted: skip the ads and the map, then count the normal results from the top. In this sketch, goldenpages.ie is 1st.

If goldenpages.ie is in the top three, its page for your trade and area gets seen. Then a premium listing moves you up that page. If it’s on page two or missing, a better spot on goldenpages.ie won’t be seen by many people.

Should you pay for a premium listing?

A premium listing is a paid upgrade on goldenpages.ie. FCR Media says it gives you a higher ranking on goldenpages.ie, plus extras like product galleries. That’s the big difference from Google. On goldenpages.ie, paying moves you up the page. On Google Maps it doesn’t: Google says there’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

Answer these three questions, in order:

  1. 1Is goldenpages.ie on page one of Google for your trade and town?

NoKeep the free listing and don’t pay. Few people will see the better spot.

  2. 2Can you count the calls it brings, with a tracking number or monthly call reports?

NoAsk for tracking first. Without it, you’ll never know whether to renew.

  3. 3Would one or two jobs a month cover the cost?

NoPut the money into Google first, where you can see what each lead costs.

  4. Yes to all threeTry it for three months, with no long contract. Count the calls, and only renew if it paid for itself.

Signs it can pay off

  • goldenpages.ie is near the top for your searchIf it’s in the top three for your trade and town, its page gets seen, and paying moves you up that page.
  • Customers ring the first names they seePlumbers, locksmiths and other urgent work, where people call quickly rather than compare for a week.
  • You can count the callsA tracking number or a monthly report of calls and clicks, so you know what it brought in.
  • One or two jobs pay for itIf a single job covers the monthly cost, a three-month test is a small risk.

Signs it won’t

  • goldenpages.ie doesn’t show up for your searchIn our check, it wasn’t on page one for four searches. They were window cleaning in Dublin, carpet cleaning in Cork, a dentist in Sligo and a physio in Kilkenny.
  • You can’t tell which calls it bringsWithout tracking, you’ll never know whether to renew.
  • It ties you into a long contractAsk how long it runs, what leaving early costs and whether the price rises when it renews.
  • The same money would do more on GoogleYour Google Business Profile is free, and for many trades Google’s Local Services Ads charge per lead rather than per month. Our guide to choosing between SEO and Google Ads explains the trade-off.

What about the printed book?

FCR Media still lists print alongside online and mobile, though it said in 2017 it would stop printing the book. We couldn’t find published figures for any print run since, so ask what you’d actually get in your area. If you do pay for print, use a phone number that appears only in the book. Any call to it came from print, so you’ll know whether it earned its place.

Questions to ask before you sign

Get the answers in writing. A good rep won’t mind.

  • How many people searched for my trade in my area on goldenpages.ie last year?A real number for your area, not a national total.
  • Where exactly will my listing appear, and above whom?Ask to see the page it will sit on.
  • Will I get a tracking number or monthly call reports? If not, how will you know it’s working?
  • How long is the contract, and what does it cost to leave early?Get it in writing.
  • Does it renew by itself, and does the price go up?Check how much notice you need to give, and diary it.
  • Is print included, and how many books go out in my area?Only pay for print if your customers still use it.
  • If a website or SEO is bundled in, do I own it if I leave?Your domain, website and Google profile should always be in your name.

Golden Pages or Google Business Profile?

Both are free to start, but they do different jobs. Your Google Business Profile is what puts you on Google Maps and in the map at the top of local results. Golden Pages is an extra listing that helps where goldenpages.ie ranks.

If you list, keep your details identical

Use exactly the same business name, address and phone number on Golden Pages as on your Google Business Profile. SEOs call these your NAP details (name, address and phone), and each directory that shows them is a citation. A citation isn’t the same as a backlink, though one listing can be both: see citations vs backlinks in Ireland.

Questions people ask

Something else on your mind? Email info@leadsireland.com.

What is Golden Pages?

Golden Pages is Ireland’s business directory, the Irish version of the Yellow Pages. FCR Media, a Dublin company, publishes it in print and online at goldenpages.ie.

Who owns Golden Pages?

FCR Media Ltd publishes Golden Pages. Its Irish management bought the business in November 2017 and kept the FCR Media name. FCR Media also runs getlocal.ie and phonebook.ie.

Is a Golden Pages listing free?

Yes. FCR Media offers a free basic listing on goldenpages.ie to every business in Ireland. Premium listings, which rank higher on goldenpages.ie, are paid.

Do people still use Golden Pages?

Mostly through Google. goldenpages.ie pages were on page one for 8 of the 12 local searches we checked in October 2026, so people still land on them. For the printed book, ask FCR Media how many copies go to your area.

Does a Golden Pages listing help SEO?

A little. It’s another place your correct name, address and phone number appear. And goldenpages.ie pages rank on page one of Google for many local searches, so people can find you through it. It won’t replace your Google Business Profile or your own website.

Is the Golden Pages book still printed?

FCR Media still lists print among its channels. Before paying for print, ask how many books go out in your area. And use a phone number that appears only in the book, so you know if anyone rang from it.

How much does Golden Pages advertising cost?

FCR Media doesn’t publish premium listing prices. So ask for a written quote showing the monthly cost, the contract length and what it costs to leave early.

Is Golden Pages better than Google Ads?

They do different jobs. A premium listing moves you up goldenpages.ie. Google Ads puts you above Google’s own results for the searches you choose, and you pay per click. Track the calls from each and compare what a lead costs.

How do I change my Golden Pages listing?

Use FCR Media’s Updater tool to edit your goldenpages.ie listing, or contact FCR Media. Make the name, address and phone number match your Google Business Profile exactly.
