SEO or Google Ads? How to choose for an Irish business
Ads bring calls this week but stop when you stop paying. SEO takes about a month on an established website, 2 to 3 months on a new one, but keeps working. For most Irish businesses the real question is which comes first, and the answer is different in a small town and a city. Here’s how to decide, and how to work out what a lead from ads would cost you.

Start with the free part: a complete Google Business Profile and a steady flow of reviews. Neither costs anything but time, and both decide whether you show up on the map. New to it? Start with how a Google Business Profile works.
Then use Google Ads in three cases. You need calls now, your busy season is short, or you want to find out which services people actually ring about. Put money into SEO for the searches you’ll want to win for years.
Most local businesses with a budget for both end up doing both. Ads bring in work from the first week. SEO builds underneath, so over time more of those calls don’t cost anything per click.
Side by side
| Google Ads | SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| How fast it works | Days. Google reviews most ads within one working day. | About a month on an established website, 2 to 3 months on a new one. |
| How you pay | Per click, or per lead with Local Services Ads, plus 23% VAT on what you spend | For the work, or your own time. Nothing per click. |
| When you stop paying | The calls stop the same day | Rankings fade slowly, if at all |
| Control | You choose the searches, towns and hours | Google decides what ranks |
| Where you appear | Above the normal results, and on Google Maps with your location linked | The map, through your profile, and the normal results |
| Best for | Calls now, short seasons, emergency work, testing a new service | Searches you want for years, and a lower cost per lead over time |
Which suits your business?

- A brand-new businessProfile first, then ads
Set up your free Google Business Profile and start collecting reviews today. Ads can bring the first calls while there’s nothing to rank yet.
- Emergency workAds and the map
Burst pipes, lockouts, blocked drains: people ring the first business they trust. Local Services Ads (where your trade is covered) and the map are where those calls happen.
- Seasonal workAds in season, SEO for next year
Gardening, gutters, chimney sweeping: pay only during the weeks people search, and build pages that rank by next season.
- A small budgetProfile and reviews first
Both are free. A small ad budget spread over several services buys too few clicks to learn anything. Start with one service if you do run ads.
- A busy city or competitive tradeBoth
SEO for competitive searches in Dublin, Cork or Galway city can take six to twelve months. Ads cover the gap while the pages build up.
- Solicitors, clinics and dentistsBoth, within your rules
Your regulator’s advertising rules apply to ads and pages alike, and Local Services Ads aren’t offered for legal or health categories in Ireland.
What we found when we checked Irish towns
In a small Irish town, the free part often gets you onto the map. In a city, or in a short busy season, ads earn their place. Here’s what our own checks on Google Maps showed.
- Small towns: profile and reviews firstIn Longford, 28 of the 102 top-three spots on the map went to businesses with fewer than 10 reviews. In Tullamore, it was 17 of 96. A complete profile and steady reviews can be enough there. See SEO in Longford and SEO in Tullamore.
- Cities: usually bothIn Cork, only 6 of the 81 businesses in the top threes we checked had fewer than 10 reviews. The middle dentist had 272. Ads bring calls while you build up to that. See SEO in Cork and Google Ads in Cork.
- Seasonal trades: ads in seasonSearches for “boiler service” in Ireland climb every September and stay high to December. A small ad budget for those months, and a page that ranks by next autumn, covers both. See how to get more boiler service customers.
- Ads already sit on the mapFor “boiler service” in Dublin and Waterford, the first listing on Google Maps was an ad. For “ev charger installation cork”, the only installer on the map was an ad, so a page on your website is the way into the normal results. See how to rank as an electrician in Cork.
Checks made on Google Maps, signed out, in October 2026. The boiler service pattern is from Google Trends for Ireland, which shows interest rather than search counts.
What would a lead from ads cost you?
Three numbers tell you most of what you need to know. If a job won costs less than a job earns, ads are worth testing.
| Each lead costs about | €36.90 |
|---|---|
| Each job won costs about | €92.25 |
Example figures: change them to your own. Find real cost-per-click estimates for your searches in Google’s free Keyword Planner, inside a Google Ads account, with the location set to your area. Your clicks-to-lead rate comes from tracking calls and forms.
How to do both without wasting money
- Get the free part rightYour Google Business Profile complete, the right category, and every customer asked for a review.
- Run ads on your one or two best-paying servicesWith calls and forms tracked from day one, and only in the towns you cover.
- Read the search terms every weekBlock the searches that don’t bring work, and note the ones that ring. Our free wasted-spend checker does the first pass for you.
- Build SEO pages for the searches that ringThe ads have just told you which pages are worth writing. Our guide to writing a service page shows how.
- Turn ads down as the pages rankKeep paying where competition or urgency means you’d miss calls without them.
One thing ads can’t do
Paying Google for ads doesn’t help your normal rankings. Google says advertising has no effect on your site’s presence in its search results. It also says it never accepts money to include or rank sites there. Anyone suggesting otherwise is wrong.
So treat them as two separate jobs: ads to buy calls now, and SEO to earn them later. SEO is what we do, through our local SEO service, and we add Google Ads management when you need calls sooner. Our prices show both. For how long SEO usually takes, see our timeline guide.

Is SEO better than Google Ads?
Neither is better for every business. Ads bring calls within days but stop when you stop paying. SEO takes about a month on an established website, and 2 to 3 months on a new one. But it keeps bringing in calls without a charge per click. Most local businesses do best with the free Google Business Profile first, then whichever fits their budget and how quickly they need work.
Should a business in a small Irish town use Google Ads?
Not always. In small towns, the businesses at the top of the map often have only a handful of reviews: in our Longford check, 28 of 102 top-three spots went to businesses with fewer than 10. A complete profile and steady reviews can be enough. Ads make more sense when you need calls this week or your busy season is short.
Do Google Ads help my SEO?
No. Google says advertising with it has no effect on your position in its normal search results. Ads can still help indirectly, by showing which searches turn into leads, so you know which pages are worth building.
How much should a small business spend on Google Ads?
There’s no fixed figure. It depends on what clicks cost for your trade and town, and how many clicks you need before you can tell what works. Google’s Keyword Planner shows cost-per-click estimates, and it’s better to cover one service properly than several thinly.
Is Google Ads worth it for a small business?
It can be, if a job won through ads costs less than the job earns, and you track calls and forms to prove it. Without tracking, there’s no way to tell.
Can I stop SEO once I’m ranking?
Rankings don’t usually vanish overnight, but competitors keep working on theirs. Many small businesses can drop to occasional updates and reviews once their pages are built; competitive areas need ongoing work.
