Choosing your Google Business Profile category

Your primary category tells Google what your business is. More than anything else on your profile, it decides which searches you show up for on Google Maps. Here’s how categories work, the names Google uses in Ireland, and how to check what the businesses above you have picked.

What is a Google Business Profile category?

A category is the label that tells Google what your business is, like Plumber, Dentist or Law firm. You pick one primary category and up to nine additional ones from Google’s own list. The primary one counts most. In Whitespark’s 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey, local SEO experts ranked it the top factor for showing up on the map.

Where your category shows up

Customers see your primary category in one place: right under your business name, on Google Maps and in the map results on Google Search. It’s the line that tells someone scrolling past what you do, before they read anything else.

A window cleaner on Google Maps. The primary category sits under the name, where every customer sees it. The line below comes from GMB Everywhere, a free browser extension, and lists every category the profile uses. Business name blurred.

Your additional categories never show to customers, but Google still uses all of them. Between them, your categories decide:

  • Which searches you’re matched toGoogle’s own example: a business with Pizza restaurant as its category can show up for searches for restaurants, Italian restaurants and pizza.
  • Which ready-made services Google offers youThe services you can add with one click depend on your categories. You can still type in your own.
  • Which attributes you can addDetails like online appointments or a wheelchair-accessible entrance. The options depend on your primary category.
  • Some special featuresGoogle’s examples are star ratings for hotels and order links for restaurants.

What your business is, not what it has

Google’s guidelines give one simple test: choose categories that complete the sentence “This business IS a”, not “This business HAS a”. A category describes the whole business. The jobs you do, the things you sell and the extras you offer all go somewhere else on your profile.

A plumber’s profile: what’s a category, and what isn’t
What you’re describingCategory?Where it goes
You’re a plumberYesPrimary category: Plumber
You also install gas boilers, and it’s a real part of the businessYesAdditional category: Gas installation service

You did one bathroom last yearNoLeave it out, or list it as a service
Your premises have a wheelchair-accessible entranceNoAttributes
The towns you coverNoService areas
A parts counter run by another company inside your premisesNoIts own profile, managed by that company
Based on Google’s guidelines for representing your business.

Google’s own examples make the same point. A motel with a swimming pool is a Motel, not a Swimming pool. A burger restaurant with desserts on the menu is a Fast food restaurant and a Hamburger restaurant, not a Dessert restaurant. Service areas have their own guide: Google Business Profile without a shopfront.

As specific as possible

Google asks for the most specific category that fits: Nail salon rather than Salon. It also says that when you pick a specific category, it fills in the general ones itself. Its example is Golf resort, which Google also treats as a resort hotel, a hotel and a golf course. So there’s no need to add a broad category on top of a specific one. If nothing specific exists for your trade, choose the closest general one and spell out the details in your services.

How to choose your primary category

Your primary category is a trade-off. It pulls you towards one set of searches and away from others. Sterling Sky, a local SEO agency, changed a law firm’s primary category from insurance attorney to personal injury attorney. The firm gained visibility for personal injury searches and lost some for insurance ones. So decide what you most want to be found for before you pick.

  • Choose what you are at your coreGoogle says your categories should describe your main business, not something you sell or offer now and then.
  • Choose for the work you want mostIf two categories both describe you, pick the one that matches the searches that bring in your best jobs. That’s not always the work you do most often.
  • Choose what’s already winningLook at the businesses ranking for that search (see the next section). If all three use one category and you use another, that alone can explain a lot.

Three worked examples

A dental practice

Primary category: Dentist. Additional, if you offer them:

  • Cosmetic dentist
  • Emergency dental service
  • Dental clinic

Add Orthodontist only if a dentist on your team is on the Dental Council’s specialist register. More in SEO for dentists.

A solicitor’s practice, mostly personal injury

Primary category: Personal Injury Lawyer. Additional:

  • Law firm
  • Conveyancer
  • Family Lawyer

When we checked in October 2026, there was no Solicitor category in Ireland. A general practice would use Law firm as its primary. More in SEO for solicitors and accountants.

A builder who wants more bathroom jobs

Primary category: Bathroom Renovator. Additional:

  • Building firm
  • General contractor

If extensions and new builds are what you want, flip it: Building firm as primary. More in SEO for tradespeople.

Back it up on your website

Google says it also picks up category information from your website and from mentions of your business around the web. A category works best when your website has a page for that work, and your listings describe you the same way. How to see the categories your competitors use

Ten minutes on your phone or laptop tells you more than any list.

  1. 1
Search like a customerYour main service and your town, on Google Maps

For example “electrician Navan” or “dentist Ranelagh”. Use the words people actually type, not your business name.

  2. 2
Read the line under each nameThat’s each business’s primary category

Note it for the top three. If they all agree and you don’t, that’s your first clue.

  3. 3
Add a free extension for the restGMB Everywhere or the PlePer extension, in Chrome

Additional categories aren’t shown on Google Maps. A free browser extension shows every category a profile uses.

  4. 4
Compare them with yoursMatches, gaps, and ones you can’t honestly claim

Add any category you’re missing that really describes your business. Skip any that describe work you don’t do, however well they rank.

Google Maps results for electrician Navan with each business primary category highlighted: two Electrical installation service and one Appliance store; names, addresses, phone numbers and reviews blurred
Searching “electrician Navan” on Google Maps. The top three’s primary categories: Electrical installation service (1 and 3) and Appliance store (2). Names, addresses, phone numbers and reviews blurred.

Notice that two of the top three use Electrical installation service as their primary category, not Electrician. That tells you Google treats it as a strong match for the search. If you’re an electrician in Navan, it’s worth having both: one as your primary category and the other as an additional one. The business in second place is listed as an Appliance store, a reminder that categories aren’t the only thing Google weighs. Reviews and distance count too.

How many additional categories should you add?

As many as really describe your business, and no more. Google lets you add up to nine. Its guidelines say to use as few as you need to describe your core business. But US agency tests have found that adding relevant ones helps. Sterling Sky saw a law firm’s employment law rankings improve within 48 hours of adding Employment Attorney.

Add it if

  • It’s a real part of your business you’d be glad to be known for
  • Someone searching for it would be pleased to find you
  • Your website has a page about that work

Leave it out if

  • It’s a job you only do now and then
  • It’s something you have, like a car park or a showroom
  • It’s run by a separate business, which needs its own profile
  • It’s only there as a keyword

How to add or change your category

  1. Go to your Business Profile. Search for your business name on Google while signed in, or go to business.google.com.

  2. Select Edit profile, then Edit next to Business category.

  3. In the Primary category box, start typing your trade and pick from the list. You can’t type in a category of your own.

  4. To add more, select Add another category. To take one off, select Remove next to it.

  5. Select Save, then check your services. New categories can bring new ready-made services to add.

Google’s page on managing your business category says adding or editing one may mean verifying your business again. Never change it while a verification postcard is on its way: Google asks you not to edit your name, address or category while you wait.

Some US agencies switch the primary category with the seasons, like air conditioning in summer and heating in winter. Because every change can trigger re-verification, we’d pick one and stick with it for most Irish businesses. Give a change a few weeks, then repeat the competitor search above to see where you show up. For everything else that moves you up the map, see how to rank higher on Google Maps.

Questions people ask

Something else on your mind? Email info@leadsireland.com.

How many categories can I have on a Google Business Profile?

One primary category and up to nine additional ones, ten in all. Google’s guidelines say to use as few as you need to describe your core business. So only add the ones that are a real part of what you do.

Does my category affect where I rank on Google Maps?

Yes. Google says categories affect your local ranking. And local SEO experts rank the primary category as the most important single factor for showing up on the map.

Can customers see my additional categories?

No. Only your primary category shows, under your business name. Google still uses your additional categories to match you to searches.

What’s the difference between a category and a service?

A category is what your business is, like Plumber. Services are the jobs you do, like boiler servicing or leak repairs, and they go in the services section of your profile.

Can I change my Google Business category?

Yes. Select Edit profile, then Edit next to Business category. Google says editing a category may mean verifying your business again, so change it deliberately, and never while a verification postcard is on its way.

What if my exact trade isn’t on the list?

Choose the most specific category that does exist, or a general one if nothing fits, then list your exact services. You can’t create your own category.

Is there a Solicitor category in Ireland?

Not when we last checked, in October 2026. Irish practices use Law firm, or a practice area such as Personal Injury Lawyer, Family Lawyer or Conveyancer, as the primary category.

How do I find my competitors’ categories?

Their primary category shows under their name on Google Maps. To see their additional categories, use a free browser extension such as GMB Everywhere or PlePer.
