The searches your customers type
People search the grant, the price and the place. These are real Google suggestions a solar business should be winning:
Solar is a big, planned buy. People read up on the grant and the price first. Then they search “solar panels” and their town. They compare reviews, photos and pages before they ask for quotes.
Who gets the calls: we checked 12 Irish towns
On 28 October 2026 we searched “solar panels” and the town in 12 Irish towns, from Dublin to Tralee. We noted the firms Google showed on the map, the next seven in its list, and the websites on page one. In 11 towns, the three on the map had a median of 80 reviews. The next seven had 69.
- More reviews didn’t buy a spotThe next seven firms had nearly as many reviews as the three on the map. The most-reviewed firm in the top ten made the map in only 4 of 11 towns. Google says it ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence.
- Hundreds of reviews weren’t enoughIn 6 towns, a firm with over 400 reviews was in the top ten but not on the map. In 3 of those towns, that firm was based in another county.
- The bar depends on the townThe middle firm on the map had 11 reviews in Sligo and 12 in Waterford. It had 135 in Kilkenny, 149 in Drogheda and 191 in Cork. 5 of the 33 on the map had fewer than 20.
- A “solar” name made no difference18 of the 33 on the map had “solar” or “PV” in their name. So did 42 of the 70 just below them. Use your real business name, because Google’s name rules don’t allow added keywords.
- Most used Solar energy company24 of the 33 had it as their main category. 3 used Solar energy system service. The other six used six different categories, from Electrician to Insulation contractor.
- Every firm on the map had a websiteAll 33 had a website link. 8 showed no address, so you don’t need a shopfront. Our guide to setting up a service-area profile shows how.

Counts as Google showed them on 28 October 2026, for “solar panels” and the town. Results change from day to day and depend on where the searcher is.
Behind on reviews? Our guide to getting more Google reviews shows how to ask inside Google’s rules.
| Town | The three on the map, in order | Middle of the three | Median, the next seven |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sligo | 72, 9, 11 | 11 | – |
| Waterford | 10, 12, 71 | 12 | 114 |
| Letterkenny | 29, 26, 80 | 29 | 29 |
| Wexford | 30, 155, 37 | 37 | 49 |
| Athlone | 21, 47, 107 | 47 | 31 |
| Galway | 398, 2, 74 | 74 | 75 |
| Limerick | 130, 129, 129 | 129 | 80 |
| Kilkenny | 135, 77, 207 | 135 | 49 |
| Dublin | 138, 267, 107 | 138 | 137 |
| Drogheda | 175, 133, 149 | 149 | 42 |
| Cork | 53, 204, 191 | 191 | 71 |
Lowest middle figure first. Paid listings and business names left out. In Sligo, we couldn’t load the next seven. In Tralee, Google showed only two firms on the map, with 43 and 49 reviews. We left Tralee out of these figures.
Page one belongs to installers with town pages
We also noted the websites on page one for all 12 searches. 82 of the 110 were installers’ own sites. Quote and lead sites took 17. Directories and forums took 9, and energy suppliers 2.
- One installer was on page one in all 12 townsIts map listings are in two counties. But it had a page about each town or county, with the place in the title, like “Solar Panels Sligo”. A page for each area is the clearest lesson from our check.
- Quote sites showed up in every townSites that collect homeowners’ details and pass them on to installers were on page one in all 12 towns. A lead from your own page or profile is yours alone, with no fee per lead. Our look at what Bark leads really cost shows how paying per lead adds up.
- Google lists the questions people askCost, grants and who qualifies come up again and again. A page that answers them in plain words can win those searches too.

What changed for solar in October 2026
SEAI changed its solar grants in October 2026. That brings new searches, and new customers who couldn’t apply before.
| Grant | Amount | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| Solar PV for homes | Up to €1,800 for 4 kWp | Now open to homes built and occupied before 2025, up from 2021 |
| Battery of 5 kWh or more | €600 | New grant |
| Solar and a battery together | Up to €2,400 | New, with one application |
| Homes on certain welfare payments | Up to €9,000 | New, higher grant for solar and a battery |
| Businesses, farms and schools | About 23% of costs | Announced to rise to 45% for 9 months |
Sources: SEAI’s solar electricity grant page and the Government’s announcement of 29 September 2026.

People are already searching for the changes. Here’s what Google suggested for the grant on the day of our check:

- A grant page that’s up to dateExplain the €1,800, the €600 battery grant and the 2025 cut-off in plain words. Put the date on it, and update it when SEAI changes the rules.
- A battery pageWho a battery suits, what size, and how the €600 grant works with or without new panels.
- A page for newer homesHomes built and occupied from 2021 to 2024 can now apply. A page that says so answers the “new build” searches.
- A business and farm pageThe higher business rate is only for 9 months. Farms, shops and offices searching for “commercial solar grants” need their own page.
Why you might not be showing up
- You’re too far from the searcherGoogle weighs distance on the map. In 6 towns, firms with over 400 reviews were in the next seven, not on the map. If you’re based outside a town, win it with a page on your website.
- One page for the whole countryThe installer on page one in all 12 towns had a page for each. A list of counties in your footer doesn’t do the same job. Our guide to town and service pages that rank walks through it.
- An out-of-date grant pageOld grant figures make people doubt the rest of your site. SEAI’s rules changed in October 2026, so check yours now.
- Different names in different placesHomeowners pick from SEAI’s list of registered companies for the grant. Use the same business name there, on Google and on your website.
- Missing pages for the jobs you wantBatteries, farms and commercial roofs each need their own page. Our free tool will check which pages you’re missing.
- Stock photosPeople want to see real roofs with your panels on them, and your own crew.
What’s different for Irish solar installers
- The grant comes firstHomeowners must pick an SEAI registered company and get approval before any work starts. Then they have 8 months to finish. Explain those steps clearly and you’re the installer they trust.
- SEAI registration is a sales channelSEAI’s search tool lists registered companies for homeowners. To register, a company needs at least one in-house SEAI registered installer, who must be listed with Safe Electric. SEAI explains the steps. Show both on your site.
- A BER after every grant jobThe grant needs a BER by an SEAI registered assessor once the panels are in. Say who arranges it.
- Planning is rarely the issueSince October 2022, houses can put solar panels on their roofs without planning permission, with some conditions. People still ask, so answer it.

Example: the first three months for a solar installer in Wexford
A typical plan for a small team doing homes and farms. In our check, the three firms on the map in Wexford had 30, 155 and 37 reviews.
Month 1: fix the map
- Set the main category to Solar energy company
- List solar PV, batteries and any other work you do as services
- Set the service area and use the same name as on SEAI’s list
- Add photos of real installs and set up call tracking on the profile and website
Month 2: pages that win work
- Write a page for Wexford and for each town you really cover
- Publish a grant page with the October 2026 changes, and a battery page
- Ask every customer from the last year for a Google review, aiming for 40
- Match the details on Bing, Apple Maps and the Irish directories
Month 3: business and farm work
- Publish a page on business and farm solar while the higher grant runs
- Add a short page answering the questions people ask about cost
- Compare calls and quote requests with month one
- Plan the spring pages before the busy season
An example of how we approach this kind of work, not a past client or a guaranteed result.

Questions people ask
How many Google reviews does a solar company need to get on the map?
Roughly as many as the middle firm on the map in your town. In our check of 11 Irish towns, that ranged from 11 reviews in Sligo to 191 in Cork. But reviews aren’t everything. In 6 towns, firms with over 400 reviews missed the map, while firms with far fewer took the spots.
Which Google Business Profile category should a solar installer use?
Solar energy company. 24 of the 33 firms on the map in our check used it as their main category. Only add secondary categories for work you really do, like Electrician.
Do I need a page for every town?
For the towns you want work from, yes. One installer was on page one in all 12 towns we checked, with a page about each one. Write each page about real work in that area, not the same text with the town name swapped.
Can I show up in towns where I don’t have an office?
On your website, yes. On the map it’s harder, because Google weighs how far you are from the searcher. In our check, firms near the town took most map spots. Pages about each town are how you reach the rest.
Should I buy solar leads?
They can fill gaps in the diary. But you pay for each one, and the site may send the same homeowner to other installers too. Ask before you sign up. Quote sites were on page one in all 12 towns we checked.
Does SEAI registration help me rank on Google?
Not directly. But homeowners need an SEAI registered company to get the grant, and SEAI lists registered companies in its own search tool. Show your registration on your site, and use the same business name everywhere.
What changed for the solar grant in October 2026?
Homes built and occupied before 2025 can now apply, up from 2021. There’s a new €600 grant for a battery of 5 kWh or more. The solar part stays at up to €1,800, so panels and a battery together can get up to €2,400.
How long does SEO take for a solar company?
Fixes to your Google profile and website start in week 1. On an established site, leads usually pick up within about a month. A new website takes longer, so allow two to three months.
