SEO freelancer or agency? How to choose in Ireland
A freelancer usually costs less, and you deal with the person doing the work. An agency has more people, more skills and cover for holidays. Here’s how they compare on price, cover and accountability, and the questions to ask either one.

It isn’t really size. It’s who does the work, who you talk to, and what happens when that person isn’t there.
With a freelancer, the person you hire is the person doing the work. With an agency, you usually deal with an account manager, and the work is done by a team behind them. Some agencies also pass work on to freelancers or overseas teams. That isn’t always a bad thing, but you should know before you sign.
In between are small studios of two to five people, and specialists who run their own small business. For a local business, the right choice depends less on the label than on the answers to a few questions.
Side by side
Prices are typical figures published by Irish SEO providers in 2026, for local SEO.
| Freelancer or small studio | Agency | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical price | About €250 to €800 a month | Mostly €500 to €1,500 a month, and €1,500 to €3,500 or more for competitive areas |
| Who does the work | The person you hired | A team, sometimes junior staff or outside contractors |
| Who you talk to | The specialist, directly | Usually an account manager |
| Holidays and illness | Work can pause, so ask about cover | Someone else picks it up |
| Range of skills | Usually one or two specialities | SEO, ads, content and design under one roof |
| Contracts | Often monthly or short terms | Some ask for up to 12 months |
| Biggest risk | Losing access to your accounts if they disappear | Paying for layers of management, and being a small client among big ones |
Which suits you?
A freelancer or specialist suits you if
You work in one town or a handful, and your website is straightforward. You want to talk to the person doing the work, and your budget is at the lower end.
An agency suits you if
You have several branches or sell nationally. You need SEO, ads, web design and content at the same time. And you want a team so the work never stops.
Questions to ask either one
- Who will actually do the work?Get a name. The person who sells it to you isn’t always the person who does it.
- Is any of it outsourced, and to whom?A straight answer matters more than the answer itself.
- What happens when you’re on holiday or sick? The honest answer from a freelancer may be “it waits a week”. That can be fine, as long as you know.
- Who owns the accounts?Your Google Business Profile, Search Console, Analytics, Google Ads and website login should all be in your name.
- What exactly do I get each month?A written list of pages, fixes and reports, not “ongoing optimisation”.
- How do I leave? The notice period, and what you keep when you go.
Protect yourself either way
The same few habits protect you whoever you hire. Keep every account in your own name and give them access, rather than the other way round. Get the monthly work in writing. Our SEO prices list every line of the monthly work, if you want an example to compare quotes against. Ask for a short monthly report on calls and leads, not just rankings. And if they show you case studies, make sure you could find the client and check the results yourself.

Is a freelancer cheaper than an agency for SEO?
Usually. Prices published by Irish SEO providers in 2026 put freelancers and small studios at about €250 to €800 a month for local SEO. Most agencies publish €500 to €1,500 a month, and €1,500 to €3,500 or more for competitive areas.
Are SEO freelancers reliable?
Many are excellent, and some aren’t, just like agencies. Check their work with past clients, ask what happens when they’re away, and keep every account in your own name so you’re never stuck.
What is a white-label SEO agency?
An agency that sells SEO under its own name but has another company or freelancer do the work. Ask any agency whether the work is done in-house, and by whom.
Does it matter if my SEO is based in Ireland?
Not always, but it helps if they know how Irish customers search, and the Irish directories that matter. Knowing the Irish category names on Google Business Profile, and the advertising rules for your trade here, helps too.
How do I switch from an agency to a freelancer?
First make sure you have owner access to your Google Business Profile, Search Console, Analytics, Google Ads and website. Then check your notice period, and ask for copies of past reports before you leave.
